About Allan Consulting : History

Allan Consulting was established by David Allan in January 2002, based in Houston, Texas. The firm quickly became a strategic partner for paper producers, purchasers of printing papers and members of the investment community looking for a fact-based, informed and independent point of view about market trends.

Because we value our clients’ privacy, we do not list clients or provide details of project work. However, a sampling of projects completed since Allan Consulting’s establishment include:

  • A new marketing strategy was developed for a major producer of newsprint and printing papers, including a refocus on optimal product lines and customers and a new internal system to evaluate customers.

  • A new market focus was developed for a newsprint company. Potential conversions to other grades were evaluated based on market potential.

  • A comprehensive review of global newsprint market trends was performed for an Asian newspaper publisher, including recommendations on future vendor strategies.

  • An ideal supplier portfolio was identified for a newspaper publisher based on analysis of the publisher’s history, relationships, needs and preferences and the universe of available suppliers.

  • Alternative purchasing strategies were identified and analyzed for a newspaper publisher.

  • Developed a joint marketing strategy for a printing paper NewCo in anticipation of a potential merger of two companies.

  • Presentations on market outlook were given at customer events of several financial institutions and other clients.

  • Marketing due diligence was conducted on behalf of a client contemplating buying a newsprint mill.

  • The Newsprint Tracker© Quarterly Reports were launched, in 2002.

  • The Newsprint Tracker© Monthly Briefing was launched, in 2008.

  • Editorial services were provided to RISI Inc.’s PaperTree Letter monthly commentary letter, 2002-2007. David Allan served as Consulting Editor during this time, and also contributed numerous articles concerning newsprint and printing/writing paper markets, consolidation, trade, pricing, market strategy and industry statistics.
