About Allan Consulting : David Allan
David Allan joined the paper industry in late 1979 as the newsprint and printing/writing paper editor for Pulp & Paper Week. In 1986 he became Director-Marketing, Planning and Development of what was then called Abitibi-Price Inc.
During his years with Abitibi-Price and Abitibi-Consolidated, Allan played a key role in the company’s growth strategy and in the integration of its marketing activities with those of Stone Consolidated and Donohue following mergers with those firms. While much of his work focused on building the company’s leading position in world newsprint markets, he was also actively involved in marketing activities related to the introduction of supercalendered papers, groundwood forms papers and free-sheet substitute papers, and in product management related to a broad array of specialty papers.
During the Abitibi-Price years, Allan was the company’s representative with the Printing Industries of America’s Graphic Arts Marketing Information Service (GAMIS). He served on the GAMIS Board of Directors in 1989 as well as chairing various study committees which supervised the work of consultants retained by the organization to conduct market research into printing, publishing and paper industry trends. In addition to more than 13 years with Abitibi-Price and Abitibi-Consolidated, Allan has also had experience as a magazine and newsletter publisher, and as manager of Enron Industrial Markets’ forest products fundamentals analysis team.
In January of 2002 Allan established Allan Consulting. Clients include newsprint and printing paper manufacturers, newspaper publishers, investment businesses and information service companies. The list of groups addressed by Allan includes Printing Industries of America, RISI Inc. conferences, Papercast conferences, the Pulp & Paper Products Council, and the annual joint newsprint meeting of the Pulp & Paper Products Council and the Newspaper Association of America. He has addressed conferences in North America, Europe and Latin America, and has also travelled widely in Asia.
